There is nothing better for your own health and well-being than to volunteer to help others who are going through the same things you’ve experienced. Please consider working with NAMI Southern New Mexico to help improve the lives of people who have mental health conditions and their families.

How to Volunteer to Teach Classes

NAMI Southern New Mexico is in search of individuals who would like to train and serve as Volunteer Leaders in NAMI Signature Programs. We will be holding 4 training sessions in April and May 2020.

All trainees must qualify for the NAMI Signature program that they train for and must register no later than 14 days before the scheduled training. Seats are limited please plan accordingly and register as soon as possible. Training is offered at no cost. Please keep in mind that training’s for NAMI Signature Programs are typically held once a year.

Las Cruces Training

Family to Family Classes

NAMI Family-to-Family is a free, 8-session, 2.5 hour per session, educational program for family, significant others and friends of people with mental health conditions. It is a designated evidenced-based program. This means that research shows that the program significantly improves the coping and problem-solving abilities of the people closest to a person with a mental health condition.

NAMI Family-to-Family is taught by NAMI-trained family members who have been there, and includes presentations, discussions and interactive exercises.

You are eligible to be trained to teach NAMI Family to Family classes if:

    • You have an adult relative who lives with a mental health condition, or
    • You are a caregiver of an adult who lives with a mental health condition, and
    • You are willing to teach an 8-session, 2.5 hour per session course to other family members and caregivers of an adult living with a mental health condition, such as; schizophrenia, major depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, or post-traumatic stress disorder, and
    • You agree to teach one or more classes for 1-2 years after you are trained.

No prior professional experience needed.

Provider Education Classes

NAMI Provider Education introduces mental health professionals to the unique perspectives of people with mental health conditions and their families. It helps providers develop empathy for the daily challenges of people living with mental health conditions and recognize the importance of including them in all aspects of the treatment process.

NAMI Provider is either a 4 hour seminar or a 15 hour program of in-service training taught by a team consisting of an adult with a mental health condition, a family member and a mental health professional who is also a family member or has a mental health condition themselves. The length of the training depends on what the provider wants – short seminar or comprehensive classes.

You are eligible to be trained to teach Provider Education classes if:

    • You are living in recovery from a major mental health condition, such as  schizophrenia, major depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, or post-traumatic stress disorder, or
    • You have a family member living with a major mental health condition, or
    • A mental health professional who is also a family member or who has a mental health condition themselves, and
    • You are willing to teach either a one-time 4-hour seminar or a 5-session course, and
    • You agree to teach a minimum of two Provider Education classes after you are trained.

Family Support Group

A Family Support Group is a peer-led support group for any adult with a loved one who has experienced symptoms of a mental health condition. It helps group members to gain insight into the challenges and successes of others facing similar experiences.

NAMI’s support groups are unique because they follow a structured model, ensuring everyone has an opportunity to be heard and to get what they need.

You are eligible to be trained to lead a Family Support group if:

    • You have an adult relative who lives with a mental health condition, or
    • You are a caregiver of an adult who lives with a mental health condition, and
    • You are willing to lead a 1.5 hour support group two times a month, and
    • You will commit to lead or assist another leader of a Family Support group for at least 24 sessions (1 year).

Connection Recovery Support Group

NAMI Connection Recovery Support Group is a free, peer-led support group for any adult who has experienced symptoms of a mental health condition. Members gain insight from hearing about the challenges and successes of others, and the groups are led by trained leaders who’ve been there.

NAMI’s support groups are unique because they follow a structured model to ensure you and others in the group have an opportunity to be heard and to get what you need.

You are eligible to be trained to facilitate a Connection Support group if:

    • You are an individual living in recovery, and
    • You are willing to facilitate a group with another facilitator, and
    • You can commit to facilitating a group (note: there are times when we understand you may not be well or otherwise cannot facilitate the group, which is why you will have a co-facilitator working with you), and
    • You agree to facilitate a weekly 1.5 hour group for at least 30 sessions (about 6 months).
